Stake Poker has put its flagship online tournament on the calendar, and the number attached to it is the one that will get the lobby talking: $125,000 guaranteed. The event is called the Stake Showdown, it runs on Sunday 27 September 2026 at 17:00 UTC, and the thing that makes it worth writing about is not the prize pool on its own. It is how little you need to spend to get there.

A seat is worth $1,000. You can pay that if you want to. Or you can start at fifty cents and win your way in.

The $0.50 route to a $1,000 seat

Stake has built the Showdown around a three step satellite ladder. Each step you win pays for the next one, so the only money that ever leaves your account is the buy-in for the step you start on. The steps have been running since 1 September, which means the ladder is already live in the lobby right now.

You are not locked into starting at the bottom. If you would rather skip the grind, Step 2 and Step 3 are open as direct buy-ins, and so is the Showdown itself at $1,000. Start wherever your bankroll and your patience meet.

Why the ladder is the interesting part

Two thousand to one is the headline ratio here, and it is a real one. Turning $0.50 into a $1,000 seat means winning three satellites back to back, which is a genuinely difficult thing to do. But satellites are not normal tournaments, and that difficulty is not distributed the way most players assume.

In a step satellite there is no first prize to chase. Every player who finishes above the qualifying line wins exactly the same thing: a ticket to the next rung. That single rule changes correct strategy more than anything else in poker. Chips you win past the qualifying threshold are worth almost nothing to you, while chips you lose can cost you the entire ticket. Survival is the product. Accumulation is not.

The practical consequence is that marginal spots you would take instantly in a regular tournament become clear folds near the bubble, and the short stacks at your table are under far more pressure than you are. Players who understand that walk up these ladders considerably more often than their raw win rate suggests they should.

Three things worth knowing before you sit down

• The bubble is the whole tournament. When the ticket line is close, folding a hand you would happily play on Day 1 of a regular event is usually correct. Your stack only has to outlast the players below you.
• Late registration is a real decision. Steps refill quickly, and a later entry into a shallower field is not automatically worse than a full stack in a deep one.
• Volume beats brilliance at the bottom rung. Step 1 costs fifty cents. Ten attempts is five dollars. The maths on repeated cheap shots at a $1,000 seat is not close.
